On this page you will find information on the dimensions of wheelchairs and how to use lifts, stairlifts and other accessibility systems.
Wheelchair requirements
To travel on the means of our network, the wheelchair must fall within these limits:
- width within 75 cm
- length within 120 cm
- height within 109 cm
- Maximum weight (wheelchair plus person)
- 300 kg in the metro. At Precotto M1 the maximum weight is 250 kg and at Cimiano M2 it is 225 kg.
- 250 kg on surface means. On Sirio trams the maximum weight is 200 kg.
On the metro, transport is allowed only if the wheelchair can easily reach the platforms, board the train without difficulty and position itself correctly in the reserved space. ATM is relieved of any liability in the event of travel with non-compliant wheelchairs.
Real-time elevators and stairlifts
Check the status of elevators and stairlifts at all metro stations on this page. Elevators and stairlifts are also marked on all maps of the metro network.
Escalators
They are present in almost all metro stations. We always invite you to hold onto the handrail and keep to the right both downhill and uphill. The behaviors indicated in our regulations are prohibited.
How to find stairlifts
The entrance served by the stairlift is indicated on the sign above the entrance stairs of the stations (next to the name of the stop). Stairlifts with moving platforms are installed in our metro stations.
Elevators on our metro network
Most of our metro network is served by elevators. On the M3, M4 and M5 lines, all stations are served. We are working to make the M1 and M2 lines, the largest and oldest of the metro network, fully accessible. The elevators are supervised by station operators, who intervene in case of need or assistance.
Starting the journey by metro: turnstiles and platforms
At the station, follow the signs to reach the accessibility facilities that lead to the trains.
Passengers in wheelchairs or with reduced mobility must use the turnstile marked with the sticker. On lines M1, M2 and M3, the turnstile is located near the station operator's cabin.
On lines M1, M2 and M3, notify the operator and inform him about the stop where you want to alight. He will accompany you and make you get on the train with a platform, which is used to overcome the space between the platforms and the train. At the arrival station, another of our operators will be waiting for you with a platform to let you alight.
On the M4 and M5 lines, which are fully accessible, you can board trains independently.
On board trains: space for the wheelchair
By law, each metro train can only carry one wheelchair. The passenger must therefore use, under his/her own responsibility, the reserved space in the first carriage (near the driver's cabin). The boarding door is signposted outside the train.
If the incoming train is approaching is already occupied by a wheelchair, the passenger must wait for the next train.
Attaching the wheelchair on board the metro
Attaching the wheelchair on board is mandatory for safe transport.
On trains on the M1, M2 and some M3 lines, the wheelchair is attached with a chain attached to a pole. Once on board:
- occupy the space between the three poles of the wheelchair personal area
- put the brake on the wheels
- pass the chain around a non-removable spot on the wheelchair
- hook it with the carabiner
On the trains of the M3 line there are stops that block the wheels of the wheelchair. They are located on the wall shared with the driver's cabin. Once on board:
- stand with your back to the wall
- press the button to activate the latches
- press the button again to release the wheelchair
On the M4 and M5 lines there is a seat belt located in the space reserved for the wheelchair.
Accessible surface vehicles
We continuously invest in fleet renewal to have more and more accessible vehicles.
- Bus. All urban and suburban lines are served by accessible step-free buses (also equipped with boarding ramps). Line 230 may occasionally operate non-accessible vehicles.
- Trolley bus. Lines 90, 91 and 92 are all served by accessible step-free buses (also equipped with boarding ramps).
- Tram. Lines 4, 7, 9, 14, 15 and 31 are all served by accessible step-free trams (also equipped with boarding ramps). Line 27 is served by trams accessible both with a moving platform and with a boarding ramp. Lines 3 and 24 are partially served by accessible step-free trams (also equipped with boarding ramps). Lines 12 and 16 are partially served by vehicles with moving platforms.
Attaching the wheelchair on board buses, trams and trolleybuses
Even on surface means, only one passenger with a wheelchair can travel (some new vehicles have two wheelchair spaces), who is required to stay in the reserved space.
The wheelchair attaches with a safety belt. On newer vehicles there is no one because the most recent law does not provide for it. On these vehicles, simply place the wheelchair against the wall (always in the opposite direction to the direction of travel) and put the brakes on.
Once on board:
- Occupy the reserved space in the opposite direction to the direction of travel
- lean against the wall
- put the brake on the wheels
- fasten your seat belt
- Press the button to confirm to the driver that you have docked the wheelchair
If you need help from the driver, press the red button.
