How to use tickets and passes

Please read this page carefully. It contains the rules for using tickets and travel passes, travelling on our lines and knowing what to do in case of a check.

Tickets and travel passes must always be validated

  • The ticket or travel pass (on the travel card or app) must always be validated at the start of the journey and every time you change means of transport
  • On the metro you must touch in both the entry and exit Turnstiles
  • The duration of the ticket starts from the moment you validate it. With the ticket you can make multiple trips and use multiple means (including the metro), as long as it is within the duration and within the zones established by the ticket (Italian).

How to touch in tickets and travel passes

Simply bring your ticket, travel pass, app or credit card close to the metro readers and on board trams, buses and trolleybuses.

Have you paid for your travel pass but forgot it?

If you do not show the app or travel card that proves that you are up to date with the travel pass during a check, you can have the report cancelled . We cancel the report after verifying that the travel pass has not been used. To do this, bring your travel pass (on the app or on your travel card) to one of our ATM Points:

  • the day following that of the report. In this case, we do not charge a fee
  • from the day after or within five calendar hours following the day of the report. In this case, we only charge the court fee (15 €)

How to avoid accidental payments and interference between travel pass travel cards and multiple credit cards

The new readers on board the means and in the stations of the metro are universal: a single reader law travel cards of the travel pass, credit cards, ATMs, watches and telephones. On board buses, trams and trolleybuses, we have positioned the readers at a height that can be reached by everyone.

  • Only touch the card or device you want to use
  • Do not place bags, backpacks or wallets that contain multiple credit cards

Holding multiple cards close to the reader may impair reading or trigger accidental and unwanted payments (they are all read, none are read, a credit card is read instead of the travel pass or vice versa).

Exit the metro with an expired ticket or invalid travel pass

  • When you exit the metro, the turnstile will not open if your ticket or travel pass has expired or is not valid in the zone you are in. You need to buy an exit ticket from our app (Italian) (Wallet menu) or from the vending machine located before the Turnstiles
  • The exit ticket is only valid for opening the turnstile. It is not valid as a ticket to continue the journey on other means
  • During a check, you will be fined if you are without a valid ticket or without an already validated exit ticket

Carefully store the ticket or travel card of the travel pass

  • The holder of the travel documents is responsible for keeping them intact.
  • Keep tickets and travel cards carefully: do not fold them, do not pierce them and do not bring them close to electromagnetic sources.
  • During a check, you will be fined if your ticket or travel card is not legible or unverifiable due to personal negligence.

Checks and fines

  • You can only travel with a valid ticket or travel pass:
    • rechargeable tickets
    • QR tickets on the ATM app
    • Cards, phones or watches used to pay contactless
    • travel pass travel cards
    • digital travel cards saved on the app
  • A switched off phone is not recognised as a valid travel document
  • You must keep your ticket or travel pass from the beginning to the end of your journey, until you leave the metro station or until you have left the surface means.
  • During a check, you will be fined if you do not have a valid ticket or travel pass. You can find the infringement codes and fine amounts on this page (Italian).
  • The ticket or travel pass must be shown to our staff at each inspection request.
  • Tickets and travel passes are strictly personal and cannot be transferred. In the event of an inspection, the travel card of the improperly used travel pass (e.g. given to third parties, altered or falsified), is immediately withdrawn. At the same time, you are fined. The travel card is kept by ATM for all protection actions deemed necessary. The holder of the withdrawn travel card may request a duplicate, at his/her own expense.

Paying a fine taken on means

You can do it online from this page (Italian). You can also pay a fine in our Infopoint Area B and C of the Duomo station (Italian)or in any post office, presenting the assessment report.

Travelling with free circulation documents or paper tickets

Do you have "at sight" free circulation documents or paper tickets? Show them to our station staff to enter the metro. On M5, call our staff from the intercom.

Travelling on lines not operated by ATM

On lines not managed by ATM, there may not be an electronic reader for validating tickets and travel passes. If you have a ticket, stamp it once to start your journey in the mechanical validation machine. If you have a travel pass, you do not need to touch in.
In case of inspection, you must show your travel card and receipt of purchase of the travel pass and follow the travel rules provided by the transport company.

Travelling with paper coupons

Some retailers outside Milan are not yet enabled to top up travel passes. These retailers issue a paper coupon of the value of the travel pass.

  • Write the travel card number and the validity period of the travel pass on the coupon
  • Always carry your coupon and electronic travel card with you
  • if you travel on ATM lines, validate the coupon at the beginning of the journey and every time you change means. If you are travelling on non-ATM lines without an electronic reader, validate your ticket only once at the start of your first journey

In case of inspection, you must show the travel card and the correctly completed coupon. Without a transcription of the data, the ticket is invalid and you will be fined in the event of an inspection.

Travelling with Under 11 or 14 travel cards

Girls and boys under 14 years old travel for free on public means in all municipalities where the integrated fare system (STIBM) applies.

  • The Under 11 travel card is on paper. To travel, simply show it to our staff with your ID.
  • The Under 14 travel card is electronic. To travel, just validate it at the Turnstiles both at the entrance and exit.
