Requesting Your Card

If you wish to purchase a travel card for use on ATM routes and do not yet have an electronic card, you should go to whichever of the following outlets is most convenient: any ATM Point, any outlet located in the underground or one of our authorized outlets outside Milan (bars, newsstands, tobacconists, stationers). You will need to bring a passport photograph, a valid ID and your Italian social security number. At the outlet please collect a Card Request Form which must be completed in full with all the information requested and hand it in with a declaration that you are attending school or university. If you are underage the form must be filled in and signed by a parent.
Forms are available from ATM Points, from all outlets in the underground and all authorized outlets outside Milan (bars, newsstands, tobacconists, stationers); a list of outlets is available on the Where to Buy Travel Cards page.
When you hand in your completed request form, if the card will not be ready immediately you will be issued a request receipt. You should exhibit your request receipt when you collect the card.

Collecting your Card

You should collect your card from the same ATM Point or outlet at which you presented your request by exhibiting your request receipt.
If you request your card from an ATM point it will be issued immediately between January and July; from August to September, when the majority of requests are made, cards are issued after 15 days. If you request your card from an outlet in the underground, cards are available 15 days after presentation of a request, whilst requests made at authorized outlets outside Milan are processed after about 30 days.

Validity and Cost

Electronic cards are valid for 4 years. You will need to renew your student travel card at the beginning of the school or academic year: this annual renewal, which is charged directly onto your card, costs € 10.

Renewing Your Travel Card at the Beginning of School or Academic Year

You will need to renew your student travel card at the beginning of the school or academic year: this annual renewal, which is charged directly onto your card, costs € 10. This operation serves to ensure that, during the current academic year, you are in fact a student and are therefore entitled to a student travel card. All you need to do to renew your ticket is to present your card at ATM Point, any of the ATM outlets in the underground or an authorized overground outlet and fill in the Student Travel Card Renewal Form, presenting a statement that you are a student.
If you are underage the form must be filled in and signed by a parent.

Charging Your Card

You can charge your travel card onto your card at the ticket machines present in all underground stations, at authorized overground and underground outlets and at ATM Points: a list of addresses is available on the Where To Buy Travel Cards page.
If you purchase a monthly travel card you may charge your card up to the 21th of the month. If you buy a monthly travel card for Milan city, you can charge your card with a maximum of 4 months at a time. If you buy an extraurban or cumulative monthly card, you can charge your card with a maximum of 1 month at a time. Annual travel cards can be charged up to the 21th of the month for validity from the 1st of the current month; from the 22th of the month onwards your travel card will be valid from the 1st of the following month.

Replacement Magnetic Coupons

At outlets not yet equipped to charge electronic cards, you will be issued with a magnetic coupon of the same value as your chosen travel card which should be carried with your electronic card at all times. To ensure that your coupon is valid, you must write the number of your electronic card and the type of travel card chosen on the coupon. Like electronic cards, coupons must be validated at the start of each journey and every time you change vehicle.

Renewing Expired Cards

When the card’s 4 year validity period comes to an end, you will need to go to an ATM Point with your card and fill in the Student Travel Card Renewal Form, presenting a declaration that you are a student.
If you are underage the form must be filled in and signed by a parent.
The cost of this operation is € 10.

Validating Your Card When Travelling

At the start of your journey and every time you change vehicle, you should swipe your card on the electronic card reader on board overground vehicles and at the ticket barriers in the underground. You should do the same with the magnetic coupon. On vehicles which do not have an electronic card reader you do not need to validate either your card or your magnetic coupon: in the event of a ticket inspection please present your coupon or the receipt for recharging your card which we advise passengers to store carefully and carry with them on all journeys.

Recommendations and Regulations for Use

The electronic card resembles a credit card in appearance and properties. As such it should be handled and stored with care; the card should not be bent, pierced or placed near sources of electromagnetic radiation. Cards are strictly personal and not be used by others.
For the correct use of electronic cards on overground vehicles and on the underground please consult our FAQs on how to use the SBME (Magnetic and Electronic Ticketing system).
Passengers not in possession of the valid card are liable to the fines specified in the regulations in force.

What To Do If Your Card is Stolen or Lost

To obtain a new card please go to an ATM Point with valid ID. If your card is stolen you should present a police report; if you lose your card you will need to fill in the lost card declaration form available at ATM Points and hand it to our staff.
In both cases, there is a charge of € 15 for the issue of a new card.
